As a member of the Sloan Fellows class of 1960 I have fond memories of the days at MIT. Those of us who are left still get together each year to renew our friendship. Our ages while at MIT ranged from 32 to 42. We and our families (mine was a wife and four boys) all lived off campus but we had social activity that provided all of the values of living on campus.

In looking at the future of education the most important element, in my judgment, is recognizing that the primary objective is to get the student to learn that education in this rapidly changing world is not a four year+ commitment – it is a lifetime commitment. The student must learn how to learn and understand that she/he, to be successful, must be committed to learning for the rest of her/his life.

Social interaction is an important part of that learning. It is difficult to accomplish effectively without direct personal contact so that is a challenge as education trends toward the internet.
