With Ed X and OCW, MIT shares in developing a platform for online education. Education is evolving rapidly - there are some needs met well by MOOCs at a small cost per student and with maximum flexibility and minimum risk to finances and reputation. There remains a need for classes/lab/project based learning too. These offer opportunity for face to face communications and collaboration.

MIT also is already involved in collaborations, such as the MIT IQ (Information Quality) effort that works with the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, and select global institutions. Perhaps MIT could expand such focused collaborations and also collaborate with the various high school project based learning approaches such as EAST Core, Project Lead the Way and New Tech High Schools, offering course ware or online courses, on campus opportunities and a new path into undergraduate and graduate project based degree programs. This could make MIT a central point in the uplift of education.
