Personal contact between student and teacher was a critical component of my education at MIT. The ability for a teacher to get to know you as a person is also critical for subsequent networking pertaining to subjects such as job opportunities or career choices. The on line experience must allow for one-to-one sessions and student teacher conferences.

Whatever technology becomes available ( or is available) to retain this critical human touch is a requirement for a successful on line education from MIT

I agree, personal interaction

I agree, personal interaction is key. Having a interactive discussion is the most effective way to teach complex concepts where the student can ask questions and get feedback (right away, not wait for an email back). I work at an international corporation and see how some problems take so long to solve because there isn't interactive discussion, only email.
