Really loved IAP (Independent Activities Period) way back when. Would love to see a version of this that extends outside of MIT, much like an abbreviated MOOC.

Some of the reasons to do it include:
- fascinating and crazy topics that aren't normally found on edX or Coursera
- less intense than a full blown MIT edX class, easier for people to commit to since the time investment is less
- may attract more people to the MIT online offerings, topics are more approachable
- opportunity for the public to experience the diversity that MIT has to offer, as well as opportunity for the MIT community to share their unique interests/research
- the general public could seriously benefit from some charm school tips!

Implementation:
- IAP activities may be a good way to experiment with a local presence for students, in addition to the online features.
- Local MIT Alum clubs or MIT Enterprise Forums may be able to host/organize local activities in conjunction with IAP courses.
